A League Expansion

I'm still optimistic Canberra might get in and Wolves. Otherwise I reckon it'll be South Melbourne. Any combo of those I'd be happy with.

I think South west Sydney should wait. Not Canberra. Backwards thinking if the intention is truly make the comp inspiring.

Sydney vs Melbourne every other game would bore me and I'm sure many others to tears.

Seriously how lucky are we to have a team. If we were just applying as an expansion team odds are we'd be no chance

Almost guarantee it’ll be 3rd Sydney and Melbourne. Purely $$ for the next tv contract. Next 2 after that will be the emotional winners like wolves, tassie, Canberra etc

I'd bet on SWS and Team 11. They are both major growth areas that the FFA will want to get in on. I'd love them to just go to 14 and a balanced draw and bring in Canberra and Wollongong at the same time. These teams can all be ready to go Day 1. Initially Team 11 will play out of an 10.000 person oval at Casey Fields while their main 15000 person stadium is built.

I cannot see South Melbourne being let in by the FFA. They will have to make it in via P & R once that is up and running. Located centrally like Victory and City they represent an area that is already catered for.

SWS are a shoe in IMO now that they have combined bids and have a billionaire backing it. FFA only care about money.

I`d be happy to see Macarthur United (SWS) get in.
It`s a massive area that takes in Fairfield to Bargo & combines the associations of Macarthur & Southern Districts.
This is approx. 1700 square kiliometres in the largest growth area in the country.
It`s a football heartland too big to ignore by the FFA.
It also has the added bonus that Campbelltown,Camden, Wollondilly, Liverpool & Fairfield Councils back the project.
The stadium is already there, training facilities are there ( Lynwood Park) it`s on the M5 freeway, next to the railway
station (Leumeah), the 2nd airport will be within it`s boundaries, Sydney FC support it & they have a huge financial backing team.
Irrespective of the FFA only wanting the $$$ (which they`ll get from any team selected) this is now the number one bid.

I hear you. But I hope you’re wrong.

I don’t see it as emotional vs economic choices. I see it as a different path to commercialisation.

I think their product has gone stale and if they want to avoid this moving forward and grow the value and excitement of the product alongside their viewership numbers this time, then they need to think longer term and capture the whole country ASAP and make it a truly national competition.

One thing to fish where the fish are. But I don’t see how anyone can be excited by watching them continuing to shoot fish in the same barrel.

Agree on all you said re SWS, but it’s still a third Sydney team. The Australian 25% Sydney competition is short sighted imo.

I want broader geographic expansion. Not just additional Sydney and Melbourne teams. So the Australian league is more exciting and more representative.

Rogic is right about Canberra. We need to help serve footballers who have no other pathway as well.

I don`t disagree.
I`d love to see Tassie, Darwin, Canberra,Wollongong, FNQ etc. all get a team in
However, in this round of "inductees" I think Macarthur United (SWS) has to be included.
If Canberra are the next best then take them too.
I would also like to see the FFA working with every other team that nominated in an effort to get them all over the line eventually.
At this point in time I don`t see the necessity for P/R, but do see a need for a National second division which could be used to showcase regional areas as well as NPL teams

I get the impression from reading all this stuff that if the clubs get their way and control the League, we could see some rapid expansion.
I would imagine that inviting further clubs into the League and creating a second (non promotion) division for state league clubs would enhance the football brand & thus increased TV rights.
Already the A League is being seen in the UK as well as other countries around the world.
Our trial with the CC Select was reportedly seen in over 50 countries.
The geographic approach is the way forward, but we also have to look at the regional sides as well.
Teams such as Canberra and Wollongong could support an A league team as they not only draw on the local area but also draw from the entire region. ie Wollongong would draw from Ulladulla to the Gong.
Canberra would draw from the Riverina, Wagga, Bega etc.
That`s still fishing where the fish are, but it also takes into account the supporters that live beyond the region that would go to away matches
rather than home games because of their loyalty to that region.
Football also has the benefit of the Womens League as well.
Couple the two together as a football package (two games on the same day) and football would be un-stopable
So, with the right approach, we could well see football become the number 1 code in this country (if it`s handle correctly).

I think that should all happen within 10yrs with or without FFA running the show. 16 team HAL, 8-10 team b league.

I think well within ten years it will be bigger than that. We could see an 18 team HAL with this group

Adelaide United, Campbelltown, Canberra, CCM, City, Dandenong, Hobart, Jets, Perth, Roar, SFC, SMFC, Southern Expansion, Victory, Wellington, West Melbourne Group, Wollongong, WSW

and then you could easily get a similar size second division using these clubs and regions.

Adelaide City, Apia Leichhardt, Bentleigh Greens, Blacktown City, Brisbane City, Brisbane Stikers, Cairns, Central West, Darwin, ECU Joondalup, Freemantle, Geelong, Gold Coast, Green Gully, Heidelberg United, Hume City, Ipswich, Launceston, Manly United, Melbourne Knights, Sunshine Coast, Sutherland Sharks, Sydney Olympic, Sydney United, Toowoomba, Townsville, West Adelaide

I`d also add Darwin, Freemantle & Hervey Bay to the second group.
