Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

I’d have disagree. Scholarships have a review period (usually January of each year) where either party can terminate if things aren’t working out (ie if a player is struggling to adapt). Cresnar is an example of this.
Many of the kids that have been coming through the academy have been living year-to-year in terms of their footballing futures since they were 15/16, some even before that - I’d argue a 2 year scholar deal is a vote of confidence in their progress and fair, and provides the player with a bit more security. I’d be spewing to lose a prospect like Lachie Bayliss after just 1 year on scholarship because another club swooped in for him and we didn’t have him locked in - could’ve easily happened with Sash.

Id suggest a 1 yr deal is a vote of confidence in their potential based on their progress so far. If either party can terminate in January what's the point in offering a 2yr deal? It means nothing if Monty says things aren't working out. Let's assume a two year deal is exactly that... I'm glad we didn't lock DJ down to an extra year and take up the spot that a Lachy Bayliss might have. There are a host of young talented players coming through our Academy every year. With such fine margins and the fact many players don't make the step up to A-league successfully I think the club are right to play it cautiously. Just my view ?

Last season was a real break out season for him. Anyone that still thinks he’s shite doesn’t watch enough games and is just going by assumptions
I think he has improved significantly since leaving us/City and personally would have preferred to keep him with us. He is far less prone to an absolute howler and knows how to use his pace properly now too.

I think there are young players within Western that have a higher overall potential ceiling though. He's a decent player that got game time during a crucial development period for him, I don't think he will really improve beyond last year's performance.

I’m not suggesting throwing out 2 year scholarships as a blanket rule. It’s not as if we don’t offer them already - tappy, Maksim, and windust are on 2 year scholarships. I felt Lachie was deserving of a scholarship through to 23/24… which really is only 1.5 years. Now that I think about it, bit odd they’ve done it until the end of 22/23 as that’s really only a few months ?‍♂️
I’m not privy to the specifics of the deal though so there may be some triggers for extension etc.

Nick Fitzgerald has 2. Where is he now?
I remember watching Fitzy in the NYL and liking him but not expecting him to establish himself as an A-League player - looked more like an NPL career beckoned. But he finished up with over 200 games, 2 championships and an FFA cup. Lachie looks like he is heading for a similar career, but to Scottmac's point, that will probably be an under-achievement based on his ability whilst Fitzy massively over-achieved.

I used to absolutely love Fitzy when he first burst into the team with maty, Bernie, Trent etc the whole gang. Thought he was going to go a long way at the time. We’re all wrong sometimes ?
