FFA Cup 1/4 final vs APIA away

Great night.
We were in another class across the entire pitch, very impressive display. Apia couldn’t even get enough chances to kick us off the park we were just too quick and organised.
Awesome football.

3 points… Monty - when I saw the team sheet I was happy but nervous in that we have never fielded this particular side/configuration. But no one (bar Roux a few times) even missed a beat. Seamless transition - even the subs for the most part. That shows a very well drilled and motivated side from top to bottom. Huge wraps to Monty and the staff.

2 points - Max. Fantastic game and a very important cracking first goal that set the tone from the get go.

1 point - take your pick tbh - but Hall was f**king immense.
Hall was huge. Deserved a second goal for that run. And the Rowles showing DDS that a cb can produce trickery and it looks 10000 times better than his.

How good to watch our home grown future performing really well.

Steele and Ballard could be running that midfield for 5yrs together when Oli is ready to hand over the reigns.

Both boys use there body really well and dummy the way they need to, to move the opposition and then open up the far side of the field.

Both got stuck in and I might say Ballard might have been trying to prove to Monty he shouldn’t have been dropped. Excellent response to Steele taking his job from nowhere.

Can’t wait to watch them together for years to come

What a great match. There were a few dozen Mariner’s faithful camped at the southern end, behind APIA’s nets, knowing all to well they’d see some action.

Second half, & many had joined the Yellow Army at the north western side of the grandstand.

The ref’s were decent. Kept the game flowing.

We lost a bit of composure around the 80 minute mark. APIA were done & dusted. I counted many of their supporters leaving early.

There was a bunch of APIA gronks beneath the two bass drums slurring the same, monotone chants. They got sulky & all left early too.

Spectacular goals from us. Some long-range beauties too!

Onto the next match.

They came past me on the hill at the start of the game and gave me grief, as they left they copped a pasting.

At the start of the season, Balard had made one start and got hooked at half time, and a few cameos off the bench, whilst only the NPL die-hards had even heard of Steele. But now - whilst acknowledging Oli would still be first choice DM and they are both still on a learning curve - I wouldn't have any qualms if they started together in the A-league.

But...sorry to be the bearer of bad news Big Al, but I don't think you are going to be watching them rip up the A-league for 5 years - on their current trajectories, they will both be heading to bigger and better things in Europe sooner rather than later.

Both of the cup games involving the Melbourne teams have been called off tonight, covid related.

On 2nd Dec there was 334 new cases in NSW. Today there are 3,700 cases. You can do the math as to where we are going to be in another 3 weeks. Stand by for lots of postponements - not to mention undermanned hospitals (and businesses) due to the number of people isolating

Victoria numbers are only climbing slowly so I am assuming omicron hasn't taken hold there yet
