ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If you want to get rid of this message, simply click on Join Now or head over to https://www.ccmfans.net/community/register/ to join the community! It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

National Youth League (NYL) trials?

Maybe we don't need to get people in for trials as we have a very efficient scouting system and development pathway?

The clubs staff have been following the academy side and I would expect a number of our NYL players to come through our development program

You know, like a proper football club

If decisions/actions are not made in an open and public manner (including criteria used), then it leaves the 'system' open to manipulation, nepotism, criticism, etc. I also believe that often when this occurs, it usually means the people making the decisions don't feel confident in being able to publicly justify those decisions!

When we start to see players getting selected, say, for example, with a strong Newcastle background, or are kids of 'mates', is that 'scouting', poaching, and/or nepotism?

And because those kinds of decisions are not being made in a 'transparent' manner, then of course, they are open to doubt, speculation, questioning, etc!

While we keep finishing at the pointy end and kids keep coming through to the first team, I'm not going to rush to criticise. Won't claim it's perfect either, but clearly they're getting something right.

Just because there is an open trail where anybody can turn up how does that prevent all of the things you mentioned? It is more often than not an exercise to appease all of the people who whinge if there aren't any. You then have to deal with all of the deluded parents who can't take the fact little Johny just isn't good enough. Coach is responsible for the results, let them run the trials how they see fit and judge them on the performances.

Sorry, what requirement is there for trials to be "transparent"? What does that mean anyway?

Are you somehow implying that we would shun the next Tommy Rogic unless he was a friend or relative of someone? Thats lunacy quite simply.

Typically the core players are signed up before the trials. Trials at this level are to pick up those talented kids that aren't already identified. Fill gaps which is fair enough.
Seen plenty of trials where there are only a few places available from the start.
