Since he turned 60 on Christmas Eve, it's time we celebrate the career of a true football genius, Stan Bowles. One of football's true characters, one of the greatest players to have played the game.
Stan Bowles was born in Manchester and began with Manchester City, before drifting to the lower leagues with Bury and Crewe Alexandra before joining Carlisle United. In 1972, however, came his big break when he moved to QPR where he played for seven years. Bowles was a genius on the field like few others, he was up there with the very best of them. His vision, accurate left foot and outrageous ball skills dazzled the football world as QPR enjoyed a Golden Age, finishing runners-up to Liverpool in 1976. At the same time, he lived life to the fullest off the field. And only won 5 England caps while some rubbish players have won far more
After QPR, short spells at Nottingham Forest, Leyton Orient and Brentford followed before he called it a day. While the English game was blessed with plenty of talented footballers in those days, and far more than today, he might well have been at the very top of that list. A true Football God.
