CCM vs Victory

I did not attend last night Mrs AM is still recovering rom covid and I felt as crook as Rookwood. PCR this morning fingers crossed.
Anyway watched on tv last night. I wish we had Pete as a lone commentator Hill and Harper are painful.
However a good win and good domination of the game. Victory looked scary on the break but it looks as if our defence has tightened up and is now coping. Danny was not called on to make any great saves. Their only goal came from a brilliant shot at distance.
What confused me was the VAR decisions.

First, the Cummings offside call. I watched it live and thought it would be close. I watched the replays and thought it was a goal. I saw them put lines on the screen that I thought could have been reversed and would still have been accepted. I do not know how they can claim an accuracy good enough to measure a bee's dick of distance in overlap from a still photo from the video of recording. I wonder what the calculated margin of error is on their lines? I suspect they have no idea of calculation of error in any measurement.
The serious argument is that VAR is supposed to be used to overturn any clear and obvious errors. There was no offside call from the ref. nor his assistant. Any error was not clear and obvious. Goal should stand.
I also seem to remember a directive that in any close offside call any benefit of the doubt goes to the attacking side. I am confused.

Second, the overturned penalty call. He may have got the ball first, but I am sure he did it by being in the way of Nizzy's next touch by putting his body in the way. If you watch clearly Nizzy is forced to stop his right foot swing to take the ball away by the keeper obstructing him. On the field of play these are usually called as fouls with the comment "Yes you got the ball but you also fouled the played, free kick." Bullshit decision.
Clear and obvious error?

Just watched the game.
- Their goal was coming, we just seemed to fall into this 15 minute period of no desire, letting the game linger, no control in the midfield.
- big difference with Nizz back in the team.
- still offering teams the chance to snatch a draw when only leading by 1. All the backs provide great examples of composure in those last 20 minutes that Steele/Silvera could learn from. A few times we worked hard to get the ball out of our box and those two had the chance to get it strong, ride a tackle and keep possession but they went for speculative kicks and turned over possession
- is Ono the only import Poppa has ever got right? Why bring a Spanish left back into the team if he's not going to be a STAR. If it's Nigro replacing him then Noah Smith must be injured. Marchan = meh
- credit to staff for getting him working again and Storm for his comeback. His best season since he left the club.
- happy with the win, could have been by three or four, could have been a draw.

I just can’t see a future in football where a player getting second to a challenge should be awarded the freekick/penalty. You guys are arguing the death of the game in which it would spiral into farcical proportions.

If that is a penalty then you should be okay with the Silvera yellow card.

Didn’t get to watch the match live last night and just watched the full replay, great win, gritty performance and the lads had to be on it as victory actually played pretty well let’s be fair. Storm was a stand out for me, probably his best match ever in a yellow jersey. Dingo is a god, build him a statue in front of the palm trees. Ref was unsurprisingly average as all hell, he always is.

personal non match highlights from the TV coverage…
Cumdog miked up in the pre game dropping the F bomb on live tv
Cumdog post match with his missus saying 4 times how excited he was to hit the beers last night and today.

No argument Mick. My discussion on that point was about the difference in decisions about fouls that occur inside the box compared with outside.
For what it is worth at the time I thought it was no penalty and was surprised when the ref signalled it. Keeper got the ball first no argument. Playing devil's advocate by asking was it a clear an obvious error. I thought it was, but many obviously disagree.

I am ok with the ref making mistakes, even Silvera's, if it keeps VAR from further upsetting the game. However, it would be nice if they take away the card on review.

No worries about bringing about the death of the game. VAR is doing that well enough. This is my broader argument.

Similar technology works well in cricket. The game copes well with the interruptions and it is used well and with intelligence. It severely disrupts the flow and beauty of our game.
Not only that, it seems to leave as much doubt about many of its decisions as there is from decisions made by the on field refs.

The decisions similar technology work brilliantly with in cricket are the absolutes. Snicks, and no balls and run outs with accurately placed high speed cameras. The decisions where the is doubt is in LBW and that doubt is addressed by returning to the umpired decision if less than half the ball is hitting the stumps.
Maybe if football is going to continue to use VAR for extremely close offsides they need to introduce a similar technique to this, especially as their ordinary cameras are not in line with the foul.

Please quote the law you reread for us all
12.1.

...
A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences: • a handball offence (except for the goalkeeper within their penalty area) Law 12 Fouls and Misconduct 104 105 • holds an opponent • impedes an opponent with contact • bites or spits at someone • throws an object at the ball, an opponent or a match official, or makes contact with the ball with a held object

So a freekick to Acton because Nisbet came over the top late and impeded Acton from getting up and retrieving the ball he got to first. Gotcha.

I think a big part of the problem is that KGJ and other VAR refs are on a bit of a power trip and sticking their noses in far too often on far too many close decisions. Their role is to pull up the clear and obvious errors.
They are over reaching their role in their power hungry ego trips.

Just went and watched a replay of the incident again in which I challenge you to do the same. If you think the ball is anywhere near Nizz and recoverable then you are completely wrong.
Lol. Challenge accepted Mick. (I had actually looked at it again last night) Happy to be “completely wrong” though,

But I am buying you a new pair of yellow glasses next Christmas. Yours have clearly gone missing ;)

Okay, just watched some better angled highlights...

Sorry to turn coat team yellow glasses. But Mick, think you're right. Acton gets a lot more on it than I thought. Still think Nizz could have made the ball before Nigro if Acton doesn't go through him, but redundant as if so would have been easily shepherded away from goal.

Anyway still buying you yellow glasses and a bottle of koolaid etc next Chrissy so you don't ruin our New years whinge again.

But for the record. f**k the refs. Game is rigged etc.

That an a zillion years of terrible decisions going against us, does condition you.
