ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

Thanks for another great pod guys.

So fantastic to hear Monty. Interesting that he always considered Stensness as a centre back in the way he played and that he hates the defensive mentality.

Pete, looks like you introduced a new word into Monty’s vocabulary in “verticality”. He loved it!
You introduced the word to me, just preaching the good word of Mick!

A few years old now but this is an outstanding article. It goes into depth the concept of verticality, the pioneers, the evolution away from tika taka, the success of Arnold and Popovic in the A-League, the negative influence of the FFA Curriculum and misinterpretations by coaches, the outdated notion of talking about formations in football, and the need for fast, precise play to unsettle defences.

You can absolutely see why Okon failed here and Milicic failed every coach gig he had by reading this article.

You can also see why Staj was successful with the Matildas and us, and why Monty is continuing this success.

This was a sensational read. Thanks Mick.

Very good article.

A huge part of our success fro mine in the last two games has been Faz's return to form and the width and pace being provided by Aqulina. It's clearly helped balance our attack and been key in being able to meaningfully switch the ball to stretch the opposition and also to break with his pace. It's given Faz acres on the other side to run into and then combined with some of kaltak's very impressive diagonals and Triantis hitting straight quality passes and oh that through ball... has meant we have dominated in attack and given teams hell.

That combined with our pressing and combativeness last game. What a joy to behold.

We have a lot of strikers who are big and aggressive but none seem to be target men. Apart from Cummings, they seem hesitant to shoot and he spends far too much time playing deep to get the ball.
Do you think the problems both in attack and defence stems from the way we play our midfield. We seem to have no one providing what at first sight appear to be powerful shooters. Our most dangerous looking ball playing attackers appear to me to be Silverra and Kuol, both playing from the bench. Would it be better to have one of them in a #10 or AM role at the expense of 2 up front?
Although at the time I was one who argued that Nizz was a DM rather than a winger when he was getting picked in that position I must admit that we looked more dangerous and the forwards linked better with the rest of the team when he played that role.
Thoughts?

Or is the whole apparent problem caused by the loss of Urena?
