Player Development / MLS Next

Off topic, but question for those that know.

I came across a very very very very interesting and unique player development programme from the MLS.

If I was 10 years younger I would write it into a major proposal and take it too APL & FA, I believe its that good. IMO this system is simple, cheap for parents, would be Australia wide and by that many local towns.

Love to send it to RP, but unsure how, anyone know an address to send to him, email or post. Not sure I want this to go to a assistant who decides what to pass on.

BTW, have written it up in a kinda article and will send to the Roar, hopefully they will put it out for others.

Again, IMO the conceptual framework this system works in is simple and IMO, once understood is obvious to set up... and like many things once having seen it you wonder why its not been done before.

I’ve done a lot of work in the sport in the US. There’s some pretty horrendous youth plans in the US. Almost everything is pay to play, and parents are essentially scammed out of a lot of money promising things like a professional contract or college scholarship to literally everyone. Part of it is also the lack of solidarity payments, I’m in San Antonio which is a USL club (2nd div) if an MLS team wants someone from their academy it’s a free. It’s a mess here. And many of the US poster children didn’t grow up and come through the US system but a foreign system by virtue of being army brats. The best example of the US system working is probably not even American but Canadian, Alfonso Davies.

There is a lot of hype for a current Philadelphia Union academy player though. Time will tell if he’s the next Davies or just another Freddy Adu.

The big thing I’d say is that Australia isn’t the US much like it’s not the Netherlands so we always need to be careful what we import.

For those interested in the Development Program, I came across, the Roar put it up today along with a couple of links I provided which have been included in the Roar publication.

A template sounds an awful lot like a curriculum 🤔

So change the word, but not necessarily, I don't understand the finer points but a club has to do other things beyond training. But even if you change the word it does not change the concept.

Very scant info on what being mls next entails from a training perspective

I would be interested in the fine details, but any time you have an overarching body mandating that clubs have to train kids a certain way, call it a bagel if you like it's the same thing.

Not sure it would take off here, if you get audited for things that will stop all the nepotism and jobs for the boys that Australian football thrives on.

If you are looking at club structure and things, the FA have started a "club changer" program aimed at clubs running better across a variety of areas - governance, diversity, women's football, etc.

Anything that reduces costs to participants and improves kids is worth exploring though.

Mateeeeeeeeeeeeeee..... I am talking about the concept of developing a training program .... I can only assume its quite detailed and well through out. As to breaking own how to coach an U 13 back who is small to defend against a tall striker moving forward in the air ... correct no details ...

The more interesting thing for me is how teams would be assessed and how they are audited to maintain quality...

Further to date they have 143 clubs MLS Next, run by 30 MLS teams, so thats less than 5 clubs per MLS team, so the management of the system looks affordable and achievable...

All systems are subject to over training a certain way... as to the finer points that would require a deep dive and direct questions to the MLS and I don't have either the time nor wish to go that far.

As to local clubs improving as FA are doing.... OK... but this is another or appears to be many levels higher than what FA are doing...

I also assume its not perfect, nor will catch every talented kid... but for me its light years better than what we currently have... and capable of being improved....

Isn't that just footballs version of a pyramid scheme 🤣

We just need those 5 MLS next clubs to link with 5 local clubs.....
LOL you seem to just wanta pick holes.... it can go to any size depends on what club wants to apply itself...

BTW this concept has no bias for those currently running very expensive training programs.....

The question could equally be asked the other way, can you explain what development programs we have Australia wide now.

As I said, I'm interested and will look into it myself.

I just think we need to be careful with the concept of a blanket system for training kids that is mandatory.

We have an NPL structure in each state, and there are academy teams that align with the a league clubs.

we have a state structure of NTCs and in most other states they still have state titles where local associations play against each other and they feed into a rep team. (NSW seem to have decided that NPL will be that).

We have an association structure that governs local clubs.

Outside that we have the private academies that are generally high cost and unregulated.

Unfortunately parents associate cost with value which allows them to gouge.

What this MLS next seems to offer is not so much a revolutionary structure (or template, blueprint or curriculum), but a greater governance model.

One of the advantages they have in implementing it is that they are geared as a nation to the MLS. They don't seem to have the vested interests like we do at state level (although if they try to circumvent the college system I can see it getting messy).

The biggest problem in implementing change in football in Australia is people.
